Privacy Policy

Aozora Bunko Reader (the “App”) is an app for reading public-domain Japanese literature published by Aozora Bunko. This policy explains what information the App handles and why.

1. Information stored on your device

The following is stored only on your device. The developer cannot see or collect it.

• Reading positions and reading status
• Your bookshelves and the works placed on them
• Display settings (vertical/horizontal writing, typeface, text size, line height, colour theme)
• Book text files you have saved for offline reading

All of this is removed from your device when you uninstall the App.

2. Account sign-in and sync

If you sign in with a Google account or with your Apple Account (Sign in with Apple, iOS only), your reading positions, bookshelves and display settings are stored in the cloud so you can carry them over to your other devices. Signing in is optional; every reading feature works without it.

• Services used: Google Firebase Authentication for sign-in (Sign in with Apple goes through Apple’s authentication) and Cloud Firestore (stored in the Tokyo region) for the data. See Firebase Privacy and Security for how Google handles it.
• What is stored: the identifier, display name and email address of the account you sign in with (Google or Apple, for authentication), plus reading positions, bookshelves and display settings. If you choose Hide My Email with Sign in with Apple, only Apple’s relay address is stored and your real address is never shared with the App. Security rules restrict access so that only you can read or write your own data.
• What is not synced: book text files saved for offline reading stay on that device only.
• Deletion: signing out stops syncing on that device. You can delete your account and all data stored in the cloud at any time from Delete account in the App’s Settings tab. See Deleting your account and synced data.

3. Network connections

• Aozora Bunko (www.aozora.gr.jp): to fetch the catalogue and the text of works. What you read is not sent to the developer.
• Google (Firebase): for sign-in and syncing your reading data (only when signed in).
• Apple: for Sign in with Apple and for revoking it when you delete your account (iOS only, only when you use these features).
• Google: for serving ads, as described below.

4. Advertising

The App shows banner ads through Google AdMob so that it can be offered free of charge.

• Google and its advertising partners may use advertising identifiers and similar information to serve and measure ads. See Google’s Policies and Terms for details.
• You can turn off ad personalisation in your device settings (Android: Settings > Privacy > Ads; iOS: Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking).
• Users in the EEA, the UK and Switzerland are shown a consent form on first launch. You can change your choices at any time from Settings > Ad privacy > Manage ad settings in the App.
• Declining ad tracking does not restrict reading, search, or offline saving in any way.
• Buying the ad-free plan (¥100/month, ¥500/year, or ¥1,000 one-time) removes the ads. It is optional; every work and every feature remains available without it.

5. Sharing with third parties

The developer does not sell or otherwise provide your personal information to third parties. Information handled in connection with advertising is governed by the Google policies referenced above.

6. Children’s privacy

The App is not directed to children under 13 and does not knowingly collect personal information from them.

7. Changes to this policy

This policy may be revised as features change or as required by law. The “last updated” date above will be changed when it is.
